Different cultures follow different methods to count a person's age. This age calculator uses the globally accepted system where age increases only on the birthday. For instance, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old, and they turn 4 exactly one month later on their next birthday. This is the standard system followed in most Western countries.

In certain traditions, age is counted by including the current year or by considering the year of life a person is in. For example, a 20-year-old person is also in their 21st year of life. One traditional Chinese method counts a newborn as 1 year old, and the age increases on the Traditional Chinese New Year — not on the birthday. So if a baby is born just one day before the Chinese New Year, they become 2 years old after only 2 days, even though their actual age is just 48 hours.

Sometimes, the months and days result from this age calculator might look confusing, especially when the start date falls at the end of a month. For example, counting from February 20 to March 20 is considered one month. But from February 28, 2022 to March 31, 2022, two different results are possible. If we consider February 28 to March 28 as one month, the final result becomes 1 month and 3 days. On the other hand, if we treat both February 28 and March 31 as month-end dates, the result becomes exactly 1 month. Both answers are logically correct. This confusion happens because different months have different numbers of days. Other examples include dates like April 30 to May 31, or May 30 to June 30. In our calculation method, we follow the first approach (counting from same date to same date).
